Introduction
When she was in school she always wanted to be a window dresser, and that's exactly where she started, but she also had a passion for fashion magazines and she used to gaze in wonder at the editorials thinking: "Imagine someone gets to put all of this together as a job - AND gets paid for it!" her Dad also used treat her occasionally to Vogue magazine, which at the time was amazing, because she used to think it was so expensive! she still have tear sheets from some of the original 70's issues and they happen to be the work of her utter heroine Grace Coddington.
When she joined the Brown Thomas display team in '83, she was delighted to act as a 'runner' for the person who used to put the shows together. Then, she left the business rather suddenly and she found herself thrown in the deep end of putting together shows and shoots. The word ‘Stylist’ hadn't even been heard of at that stage - she was a ‘Fashion Coordinator’! she used to work very closely with my display boss Bill Simpson and they produced the shows together. After a few years he became Creative Director and she began to take on all of the production and styling work. It was quite a unique position, but it was brilliant and it enabled me to take everything from scratch, which she still does to this day. In 1999, she left to go freelance, which she has been doing ever since.
You will never, ever find stylist Catherine Condell in front of the camera talking about her work or doing interviews about why she put this with that. That is most definitely not her style. Catherine is old school: she is far happier letting the camera and the images tell the story. Her signature work is full of detail and covetable pieces that send you rushing to read the credits to see just where did she find that. Catherine's work has graced all the top glossy magazines here and she works with creatives on shoots abroad. Her AW15 shoot for the October edition of Image using lots of paste jewellery on winter wools was all about classic winter staples with a luxurious embellishment and it was acclaimed widely as one of the best of the season.
