Introduction
Evon Chng is a freelance fashion stylist with a sense of style that’s part misfit part chic. For her, it is tough to describe because it is always changing – from goth to streetwear to minimalist fashion. She likes to put a twist on things. For example, wearing vintage pieces in a modern way or boyish suits in a feminine manner.
She studied mass communication and my first job was as an assistant director. Through an internship, she met a few people who then asked her to come and style their shoots. One thing led to another and she became a fashion assistant. She liked to dress up since she was a child. She was experimental even with the type of shoes, socks, and hair accessories she wore in primary school. She wore lace-up sneakers instead of Mary Jane shoes so she would not look so feminine like the other girls. She buys a lot of Saint Laurent and French hipster label The Kooples, and also mix in brands such as Zara, H&M and Uniqlo and Singapore brands Klara, Eight Slate, and Exhibit.
She says that "I’m also a strategic shopper in that if an item I like has a higher perceived value than its retail price, I will buy it. I heard a quote once from a movie about an astronaut and it’s stayed with me since: if you don’t believe in yourself, who will? It’s a mantra I carry with me daily and it serves as an encouragement for myself. In the industry I work in, teamwork is such a core essential element. Your mood and the energy you bring to the team affect those around you. With that in mind, I strive for positivity. I believe in myself, in my team, and I will root for those around me. It’s vital that you do something that you are good at, focus on that and refine your skills."
